Authorities are advising residents in the path of the smoke from the burning Mangrove Landfill fire to seek medical attention if they are experiencing respiratory problems.
They have moved to open The Lester Vaughan School and Sharon Primary School to accommodate anyone affected by the blaze which started this morning after 9.
Programme officer with the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) Tracey Marshall said anyone affected or having any queries should call the Command Centre at 419-7501.
Incident Commander of the site, Assistant Superintendent of Police Bruce Rowe and acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer Lloydson Phillips said in a media update that the blaze was under control, adding that the Accident and Emergency section of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital was on standby.
The blaze, which consumed about half an acre of the site where tonnes of tyres are dumped, forced the activation of the DEM, the coordinating body for the police, fire, health, environmental and other emergency-related agencies.
Tractor drivers were pressed into operation as tonnes of top soil taken from a nearby area were heaped on to the site in order to smother the fire.
Authorities at the Command Centre said so far, no one has entered the two centres or sought medical attention. (AC)
