That’s quite the showing for Anderson “Cat” Layne.
The undoubted Slam-A-Dom MVP played his way into tournament history, becoming the first player to finish in the money for all three formats of the local dominoes competition over the four-day Easter weekend.
Playing at the Table Tennis Centre, Layne ended in the runners-up spot for both the individual three-hand and the four-hand pull-a-rama after his side made the semi-finals of the team three-hand event.
The veteran barely lost out on the three-hand crown when he finished just two games shy of completing the six on the final table against eventual winner Joseph “Bud” Harewood and DeCourtney Estwick.
Layne then paired with fellow national player and Police clubmate Glenroy Nowell but they fell short against Roger Yearwood and relative unknown Robert Applewaithe in the four-hand pull-a-rama.
Wendy Brewster and Lisa Olton finished in third place while Lamar Callender and Peter Forde were fourth.
Led by a truly dominant performance from national player Randy Agard, More & More were convincing winners of the team three-hand event after blitzing Gas Boys and Unity on the final table.
Gas Boys and Unity could only combine for one game as Agard was simply ruthless in that final while steering More & More to victory.
Despite a drop in overseas entries, around 400 players contested the seventh edition of the region’s most lucrative dominoes tournament.
“The entertainment was very good and the player participation was even better while there were no challenges over the results, so overall I think everyone was happy,” said tournament organiser Rodney Inniss.
“But what we’re going to do next year in terms of registration for international teams is that we’re going to use the website and allow people to register via Pay Pal.
“We’re going out later this year and early next year to some of the countries so it’s just a matter of networking early and encouraging these people to come,” he added. (JM)
