The Bridgetown Sewage Treatment Plant is out of danger. That’s the word from Minister of Energy and Water Resources Wilfred Abrahams, who told THE NATION the plant was now running at an 85 to 90 per cent clip, and could reach full capacity in the first half of 2019.
“The Bridgetown plant was operating at less than a quarter of its capacity and was about to shut down when we inherited the problem,” he explained. “Now there are no hitches or any problems at this stage. In the next couple of weeks we will award the contracts for the flushing of our entire sewerage network, made up of Bridgetown and the South Coast Sewage Plant to unblock pipes and clean out the network.”
He said a lack of maintenance in the last decade had exacerbated issues with The City plant, but finance was now being sourced to make sure regular screens of the facility were done.
“Money has been now voted for the screens now that we have a slight ease in the economic situation in Barbados, and we are in the process of doing that,” said Abrahams. (BA)
