NEW YORK – A former Guyanese parliamentarian, and a Guyana-born United States citizen are facing the possibility of spending the rest of their lives in an American prison after being found guilty of conspiring to attack the John F Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York, by exploding fuel tanks and the fuel pipeline under the airport.The convictions of 58-year-old Abdul Kadir who was a politician in Guyana for decades and served as mayor of the country’s second largest city Linden, and Russell Defreitas, 67, a naturalised United States citizen who was born in Guyana, came Monday at the end of a six-week jury trial heard before United States District Judge Dora Irizarry. Sentencing is set for December 15. But lawyers for Kadir and Defreitas have given early notice that they plan to appeal.
