West Indies cricket captain Darren Sammy has silenced his many critics. I like the way that he played in the second Test at Trent Bridge, England. He is not only getting wickets, but got his maiden Test century in the same match, and congratulations are in order.
Some will still criticize him. Last Friday when he was 88 not out, one newspaper columnist said to me that those runs were the worst thing that ever happened to Sammy, for he will remain as captain for a very long time.
If not Sammy, then who? Â
He and coach Ottis Gibson have brought some order and discipline, which the team lacked for a long time. Coach Gibson has done a good job. He is a former bowling coach for England and for a black person to coach the world’s top team says a lot.
The batsmen, it seems, cannot make runs in both innings of a match.
It also seems that the selectors have gone from the frying pan into the fire – that is, from Carlton Baugh back to Denesh Ramdin. Right now, West Indies have the worst wicketkeeper/batsman in world cricket! It is time to move on to new blood – a batsman who can keep wicket.
We need players who are committed to West Indies cricket and not only to the money!
