There continues to be a disconnect among children in relation to transforming their creativity into successful careers, says executive director of the Barbados Manufacturers’ Association, Bobbi McKay.
She believes too many children display innovative ideas from young, only to grow up and fail to follow up on them.
“Too many times I go to exhibitions and see wonderful products and it pains me to see the young people. They grow, they go all the way through to Community College, all the time making wonderful products. Then it ends right there because they go on to become a lawyer or a doctor or sit in somebody’s office and these products end up in Westbury Cemetery,” she said.
McKay was speaking Monday during a prize-giving ceremony for schools that participated in the Barbados Manufacturers’ Exhibition (BMEX) at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, Two Mile Hill, St Michael.
Minister of Education Ronald Jones, in his feature address, said while there was nothing wrong with becoming a doctor or a lawyer, there was a need for more creative thinkers in Barbados.
“We need more of those persons who can innovate products into other markets. There is a future for you if you can continue to track this path. Let us produce more in our fields, factories and mines.” (CA)
