Landship marks 150 years

THE BARBADOS LANDSHIP now has a permanent structure in its honour.
As part of celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Barbados Landship, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart unveiled the commemorative monument, which is in the form of a ceremonial stool. It is stationed just outside the Queen’s Park Steel Shed, where the Landship performed and held many activities over the years.
The ceremonial stool is a symbol of leadership in the Asante political system. Its place outside the Steel Shed symbolizes the role of the Akan peoples in Barbados, as noted in the evidence of the 1675 revolt here.
The Barbados Landship has played a significant role in keeping the memory of the ancestors alive after Emancipation. (YB)
