Girl power has won out at Ellerton Primary School.
After sitting back and watching their male counterparts basking in the limelight for two straight years during Boys’ Week, the girls lobbied and won for a week of their own.
The inaugural Girls’ Week kicked off yesterday with a service at Ellerton Wesleyan Holiness Church, at which retired senior teacher of Luther Thorne Memorial School, Melanese Lashley, addressed students.
During her welcoming remarks, principal Donna Allman said the theme for the week was Girls Of Today: The Leading Ladies Of Tomorrow.
Senior teacher Shona Gill told the DAILY NATION that while the focus was on the girls this week, teachers would be teaching both sexes together as usual.
After the service girls had an opportunity to play teacher for the rest of the day. They manned classes, corrected books and did many of the duties taken on by the real teachers.
Gill said some of the other activities for the week included a mother/daughter session this morning, followed by a discussion by director of PAREDOS Marcia Graham for parents, while retired Chief Probation Officer June Gibson would speak to the children. (YB)
