Iconic buildings to be saved

TWO GOVERNMENT buildings which have gone into disrepair should be receiving some attention soon.
Speaking at a read-a-thon programme at the National Library Service, Independence Square, to mark 166 years of the Public Library Service in Barbados, Minister of Culture Stephen Lashley said the Carnegie Building, which once housed the Bridgetown Public Library, and the Empire Theatre are among “iconic buildings” which “this Government is now called upon to save from extinction”.
Lashley said a Task Force for the Restoration and Preservation of Historic Buildings has been in place for more than a year now, and that the Carnegie Building has been given high priority. He also disclosed that the regulatory approvals have been secured for the start of restoration of the Empire Theatre. (YB)
