COUNSELLOR AND PASTOR Roger Husbands has mixed feelings about the last SATURDAY SUN’s Back Page picture and article titled Sex Scene – Children Caught In The Act On Classroom Video.
The outspoken Husbands, chairman of Drug Education and Counselling Services, said he was “glad” the newspaper ran the article as it was a wake-up call.
“We need to stop hiding and recognize there are children who are not afraid to have sex out in the open and with no one stamping out that behaviour, I think the article was necessary,”? he told the DAILY?NATION in a telephone interview yesterday.
The picture depicted a male and female student from a rural secondary school allegedly engaged in a sexual act. It was a still taken from a video on Facebook.
Husbands said he also saw the video, saying it was not the first one.
“The issue is that children are having unprotected sex and that is not the only video. There are girls 14 and 15 years old who are pregnant for their peers so we have to ask ourselves what are organizations like the HIV/AIDS Commission doing?
“We have to teach our children morals and values and I am glad it was finally published so we can say ‘this is a problem’,” he said.
On the other hand, Husbands admitted the picture could be viewed as distasteful.
“Perhaps it should have been done in a different forum. I thought the article should have been more motivational as to say that the displayed behaviour was wrong, more than being so descriptive which glorified the act a little, but overall I am glad,” he said. (CA)
