Member of Parliament for St Lucy, Denis Kellman, says the time has come for Barbadians to stop planting only palm trees and plant some fruit trees to feed themselves.
Kellman made the call at a tree-planting exercise at the Ignatius Byer Primary School last Friday.
Kellman said: “We have to learn to feed ourselves and to stop this selfish approach that if you plant fruit trees, someone else will get the fruits.”
Suggesting that the culture of giving should be brought back to Barbados, the MP added:
“You should plant fruit trees and exchange the fruits with your neighbours who have different fruit trees. We have to get back to this brotherly love and start caring about each other.”
He continued: “We have failed as a society to recognise that people selling at roundabouts are selling local products. We need to find some place for them where they can sell their goods.
“Whenever a coconut is sold in this country, it saves foreign exchange. But people driving in Mercedes and other big cars that do not like them there should realise that they are saving them foreign exchange. But we have become so selfish in this country that we only think self.” (PR)
