Why BWU didn’t back NUPW president

THE BARBADOS Workers’ Union (BWU) has been explaining why it didn’t back National Union of Public Workers’ (NUPW) president Walter Maloney in a failed bid to head the Caribbean Congress of Labour (CCL) during an election in the Bahamas last month.
BWU general secretary Sir Roy Trotman told a news conference tonight that, to begin with, his union had not received early notice Maloney would be a candidate for president of the CCL.
In the second instance, he said, notice had been given “in an offhandish manner where the candidate said ‘I guess you heard that I am running’ for president”.
Thirdly, Sir Roy said, the BWU had been shabbily treated by the NUPW after backing the NUPW’s candidate, Ann Marie Burke, three years earlier in another CCL election in Grenada.
Maloney lost the poll 25-15 to David Massiah, who was nominated by the BWU. (TY)
