STAFF nurses at the Psychiatric Hospital, who for the last two years have been getting the pay of nursing assistants, will soon be remunerated.
And there should be smiling faces as well at the St Philip District Hospital for substitute general workers, who have not been paid for six months.
Yesterday, acting deputy general secretary of the National Union of Public Workers, Roslyn Smith, confirmed that the process was in place for the two groups of workers to be paid shortly.
“The process has started for the workers at St Philip District Hospital that they can get some money, albeit after the school term has started. It’s unfortunate that workers should be working for such a long stretch without being remunerated.
“These people have families to look after and I am happy money they have worked for is soon coming.
“In relation to the Psychiatric Hospital, the relevant information has also been sent up, and staff nurses will soon be getting paid in accordance with their job description.
“It’s pleasing that there has been response relating to the article that appeared in the SATURDAY SUN,” she added.
Several employees at the Psychiatric Hospital have been hopping mad for some time, because of the failure to adjust their salaries after they upgraded their qualifications by passing the regional examination for staff nurses.
The problem stemmed from a hitch in communication between the Psychiatric Hospital and the Personnel Administration Division over the correspondence pertaining to the workers’ upgraded qualifications.
Smith said she was especially delighted that relief was coming to the workers at the St Philip District Hospital.
“What do parents do with school just around the corner? If you have not been paid for the last six months, how do you purchase clothes, shoes and books? Children should not have to suffer. I am glad the long wait will soon be over.” (MK)
