SO MUCH for that winning streak.
It’s back to the drawing board for Cougars after Dario Cumberbatch had a game-high 26 points, including ten during a 36-18 fourth-quarter run that spurred Warrens’ 112-84 upset in Sunday’s Co-operators General Insurance Premier League basketball action.
It marked the shocking end to Cougars’ run of four games, which was snapped after star forward Ricardo Jemmott was unavailable for the weekend fixture at Barbados Community College.
The eventual margin was surprising still, even if not the end result, as Cougars only trailed 76-66 entering the fourth quarter despite Greig Springer’s big 13-point outburst in the previous third.
But Cumberbatch was just as good later on, hitting dunk after dunk, including a huge two-handed throw-down over Damien Nicholls during the big blowout.
Springer added a key trey and two other baskets to further fuel the rout. He finished with 24 points while Pearson Griffith chipped in with 20 for Warrens, who improved to a 3-7 record.
Nicholls led Cougars (6-5), who still remained in the fourth and final playoff position, with 25 points and 15 rebounds, Selwyn Brooks scored 14 points while Adrian Stewart netted 13.
In the night cap, forward Jamai Puckerin scored ten of his 15 points as part of a decisive 25-13 second-quarter run to lead Station Hill Cavaliers to a 77-62 beating of an Akeem Marsh-less Urban Vybz St John’s Sonics.
The spurt increased what was already a 20-14 cushion into an 18-point (45-27) halftime lead, which Station Hill managed to maintain at the end of the third (60-42).
Darren Hunte added 11 points for the third-placed Cavs (8-3) while Shane Whittaker scored 15 to lead Sonics (6-5), who missed an opportunity to move a half-game ahead of Cougars.
Earlier, Mayhill used a strong fourth-quarter performance to hold off Combined Schools Tridents 78-68 in a First Division contest. (JM)
