A new 10k champion is in town. First-timer Yves Sikubwabo not only made his debut run but won the Colombian Emeralds International 10K during Saturday’s Run Barbados Series at the Bay Street Esplanade.

Following Friday night’s triumph in his Canadian colours in the Signia Fun Mile, the 25-year-old Rwandan-born distance runner returned to make his mark in a time 31 minutes, 30 seconds, taking the honours in the absence of Frenchman Habarurema, who was unable to attend. He is in Kenya training with the national team.

“The race was amazing. It was just that we had heavy rain but it was great. You couldn’t go too fast because it was slippery, so you had to take precaution and be careful with the turns and how you paced yourself,” Sikubwabo said.

Though treading with caution from the start at the Esplanade, he managed to maintain his pace towards Bridgetown, over the Swing Bridge, onto Wharf Road to the Princess Alice Highway through towards Pelican Village from Hincks Street onto Prescod Boulevard and around the roundabout at the Shallow Draught. He reached Spring Garden in just 20 minutes before heading back to Bay Street. (RG)
