One women’s open national record and three national age group records fell on the opening night of the Cave Shepherd & CO. Ltd Short Course National Swimming Championships at the Aquatic Centre on Tuesday.
Zabrina Holder had a surprise win in the 100 IM (individual medley), upsetting favourite Deandre Small to post the first women’s open national record for the meet.
Holder stopped the clock at 1 minute 07.57 seconds to erase Small’s age group record of 1:10.50 set last momth at the Powerade Secondary Schools’ Swimming Championships, and the open women’s mark of 1:08.76 set by Small a year ago.
Both Small and Amara Gibbs swam under record time to post 1:09.72 and 1:09.58, respectively. In the boys’ 11 to 12 age group, Christian Selby had a brilliant swim to establish the first record in the evening’s proceedings in the 1500-metre freestyle (60 laps). He destroyed Damian Alleyne’s record of 17:07.87 established in 1996, posting 16:45.32.
At the 800-metre mark, Selby again erased Alleyne’s existing time of 9:02.55, his time of 8:51.59 was recorded at the 32nd lap.
Sariyah Sherry was the lone 11 to 12 female contesting the 800 SCM freestyle and posted a quadruple “A” time of 9:41.46 for the gold medal. Jonathan Manning also posted a quality time in the 1500 SCM freestyle of 18:29.63 and took the silver.
Tiffany Titus and Damon St Prix, also won gold in the 100-metre butterfly with times of 1:18.49 and 1:14.82, respectively.
The competition continues today at 6 p.m. and the 50-metre butterfly for the junior age groups, 100-metre butterfly for seniors and the 200-metre freestyle for all age groups will be contested. (PR/SAT)
