Warrens fighting against the odds

It will take a major miracle, and then perhaps even more for Pan American International Insurance Warrens to win the Goddard Enterprises Limited women’s division one volleyball league and become double-crown champions for 2018.

When the competition continued on Monday night at Oldbury, St Philip, Warrens’ hopes of reeling in leaders Chargers went awry as they were beaten in five sets 28-26, 25-20, 27-29, 24-26, 15-6 by Omega XL Deacons.

Eighteen-year-old Shanae Boyce stunned Warrens by attacking and blocking through the middle with great success for Deacons. With former national player Sophia Walcott being repeatedly blown for foul setting, Warrens never got their attack going.

While Warrens’ big guns of Anicia Wood and Rhe-Ann Niles were never given enough scope to fire, young Xhane Greenidge looked the better in attack and defence. On the other hand, former Barbados libero Marissa Dowell, who can comfortably nod and walk under the net, confounded Warrens with her off speed “spikes” racking up points for Deacons. (KB)
