A GIRL has won the United Insurance Primary School Under-12 Chess Championship for the first time.
St Gabriel’s student Pritika Kandamaran emerged champion from a field of more than 20 players when the tournament was contested at the St Michael School recently.
Kandamaran put together an unbroken string of 12 victories in her last two tournaments.
Her recent win was commanding, and when she hit the clear lead in the fifth round after defeating the then co-leader, Anton Greenidge of Milton Lynch, it was a mere formality that in the final round she would also disposed of Azarai Johnson of Charles F. Broomes to win with an unblemished performance.
Greenidge took second spot with five points, while Azari Gittens edged out a group of four other players to take third place on a tie-break. (PR)
