OMAR PHILLIPS has returned to the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) team as captain for the first round Headley-Weekes first-class cricket match against the Windward Islands starting at the 3Ws Oval on Friday.
Phillips, a left-handed opening batsman, who played two Tests for the West Indies against Bangladesh in 2009, scoring 94 on debut, had been omitted from the CCC’s team in the recently concluded Caribbean Twenty20 tournament.
Inform teenaged left-handed batsman Raymon Reifer and Banks’ allrounder Carlos Brathwaite have been named in the 13-man squad which will see top-order batsman Kyle Corbin, a part-time wicket-keeper, doing duties behind the stumps in the absence of regular gloveman, Chadwick Walton who has been picked for Jamaica.
Both Reifer and Phillips played in both Barbados’ trial matches at the St Catherine’s Social and Sports Club, Bayfield, St Philip. The former also appeared for a Barbados Select XI against the Windwards in a three-day practice match which ended at the Police Sports Complex on Monday.
Reifer, 19, hit four centuries in the 2010 Barbados Cricket’s Association’s LIME Division 1 championship when he amassed 802 runs. He is also a handy left-arm medium fast bowler.
Brathwaite, a lanky six-footer, made his debut for Barbados in the Caribbean T20, playing one match. He is more known for his batting, having opened the batting for the Barbados Under-19 team and Banks but in recent times, his slippery fast-medium bowling has come to the fore.
While Reifer and Brathwaite are included, there is no room for another Barbadian Jonathan Carter and aggressive Vincentian opener Miles Bascombe.Bascombe’s compatriot, the experienced Romel Currency, who led the T20 side, and 38-year-old coach/player Floyd Reifer, are among the selectees.
SQUAD: Omar Phillips (captain), Kyle Corbin, Kjorn Ottley, Raymon Reifer, Romel Currency, Floyd Reifer (player/coach), Nkrumah Bonner, Ryan Austin, Kavesh Kantasingh, Carlos Brathwaite, Kevin McClean, Gilford Moore, Shervon Penco. Officials: Horton Dolphin (manager), Steven Leslie (assistant manager), Andrew Simpson (physiotherapist/trainer). (EZS)
