JUST OVER a thousand dollars in plants were stolen from Hunte’s Gardens at Castle Grant Plantation in St Joseph last Thursday night.
Owner of the enterprise, Anthony Hunte, said that the three-year-old plants – which were full of flowers – were Thailand beauty Dwarf orange Ixoras.
He said that he believed it was “my lime thief” who stole the plants.
“The sad thing about it is I personally put organic manure on that garden yesterday, and it is extremely hard to pay somebody in Barbados to put their hand in sheep manure, and someone came and put their hand in sheep manure to steal.
“The person stole the plants from outside the gate and they climbed over the gate to get the rest.
“There is someone stealing my limes and I saw him in the fish market and he said, ‘I have given you several months and I haven’t stolen any limes but I am coming back for some shortly.’
“I have seen him. He used to steal all of my plants. It probably is him again because he knows this area well,” said Hunte.
He encouraged Barbadians to be watchful of their properties because he believed that people were stealing to get an extra dollar to carry out their Christmas shopping.
“This plant has been open for four years now and over the years we do have, from time to time, stealing of plants. But not only are people stealing plants but the farms are also being hit.
“The other evening, the dogs on a chicken farm were poisoned, and then another nearby farm had 500 chickens stolen, and they are also getting turkeys stolen.” (AH)
