The parish of St Philip appears to be in the driver’s seat after the first night of competition in the Barbados Badminton Association Independence Parish Tournament 2010 on Tuesday night at the Wildey Gymnasium.
St Philip are unbeaten after their first two matches, separating themselves from St James, St Michael, St George and Christ Church in the race for the overall title. Each tie was fiercely contested, with all going the distance to five matches.
The first matchup between St Philip and St George set the tone for the eastern parish as they were able to win the tie after the first four (3-1) matches, with the fifth game being a formality.
Despite having two of the strongest male senior players in Kevin Wood and Andre Padmore on the St George side, St Philip found a way to break through, with captain Ansley Edey and Andrew Clarke giving good performances to lead the way.
Indeed, the true highlight for the St George team was the return of Dionne Haynes to competition and she gave a solid performance throughout the night in all her matches.
St George were able to rebound later in the night to defeat St Michael (3-2). Earlier, St Michael edged St James by the same margin behind Dakiel Thorpe’s efforts.
Both St James and Christ Church are yet to secure a victory but can still do so since they have to play more ties than their competitors. Even though Christ Church lost to St Philip 2-3, they possess the likes of Nicholas Reifer and Monyata Riviera who both put in a strong showing.
Riviera continues to have an extremely good year and demonstrate that she is one for the future as she and Gloria Chung almost provided an upset in the deciding match before going down 20-22, 17-21 against Finn West and Dave Forde.
The competition concludes at the Barbados Community College on Saturday with action starting at 2 p.m. (PR/SAT)
