Athletics ‘holds key’

Junior athletes have been advised to stick to athletics as it was not only a critical sport to prepare them for other sports, but it could prove lucrative in the future.
Those words of wisdom came from veteran sportsperson and senior coach at the National Sports Council George Shepherd as he addressed the winners of the 2010 Inspire Sports Trevor Straughan Memorial Primary Schools Cross Country which was held at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex on November 4.
Shepherd, who has made a name for himself in fashioning the basketball future of players coming through the Combined Schools during the past three decades and who is also deeply involved in boxing, told the children that it was key for them to continue in their athletics when they moved to secondary school.
Pleasant surprise
Sports consultant with the sponsors, Jan Webster also expressed pleasant surprise at the support and enthusiasm which everyone had shown to the runners irrespective of their positions on race day.
“In the UK everyone is only interested in the top three or perhaps five spots, but here in Barbados there was equal applause for the persons who came first and 41st,” Webster said.
Standing highest on the podium were Christ Church neighbours, Christ Church Girls and Milton Lynch Boys who smashed their opponents on that wet and soggy day.
Christ Church Girls had earned 18 points with St Angela’s capturing 102 and St Winifred’s, 126.
Milton Lynch gained 29, a far distance away from St Stephen’s 150 and Bayley’s 153. (KB)
