UWI amenities fee may go up

Students at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus (UWI) could soon see a 100 percent increase in their amenities fee.
Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles made this revelation on Wednesday night while delivering UWI’s 50th anniversary public lecture at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination.
The fee, which is paid by all students, is used to cover food services, provide full health insurance, sporting and recreation facilities as well as aid in the personal and professional development of the students.
Sir Hilary pointed out that currently students at the university only paid $700 per year, or just over two percent of their total education bill.
However, he said he believed it would be reasonable if students contributed five percent of that total bill themselves, or a total of around $1 500 a year.
