Government has come to the aid of 18 dairy farmers who have been severely affected by a quota cut from Pine Hill Dairy (PHD).
Through the Agricultural Development Fund, the Ministry of Agriculture has provided the farmers with $1.5 million which is expected to ease some of the pressure, at least for the meantime.
Since 2012 the dairy industry has been in a crisis, with things reaching an all-time low in September of last year when the PHD cut the farmers’ milk quotas by 25 per cent.
In a presentation at the ministry’s Graeme Hall headquarters, Acting Permanent Secretary Lennox Chandler, speaking in place of Minister of Agriculture David Estwick, said he hoped the funding would help the farmers.
