Warner’s Under-10 chess king

Miguel Warner of Arthur Smith Primary School is the new Under-10 national chess champion.
Warner took the title at the recently concluded championship played at The St Michael School.
Warner took a clear lead in the fifth round when he defeated joint co-leader Shane Skinner of St Cyprians Boys.
With victory in the sixth round against Ocean Small, also of St Cyprians, Warner grasped his first age-category championship with a maximum of six points from six games from the 30-player field.
Warner has good chess pedigree, for his father is former national chess champion FIDE master Delisle Warner and his aunt is senior women’s player Juanita Warner.
Finishing in clear second was Elliot Harewood of St Gabriel’s. He defeated Skinner in the final round and this allowed him to finish on five points.
Skinner secured third spot with the best tie-break ahead of a large group of players on four points. These included Ocean Small, Christian Clarke, Taurean Shepherd, Danyal Evelyn and the best-placed female Pritika Kandamaran of St Gabriel’s.
The top Under-8 finisher was Leigh Sandiford of Providence.
The young players will next see action in the Sagicor Open Chess Championship over the summer holidays. (PR)
