Strength in unity, says Bishop

Roman Catholic Bishop Jason Gordon has suggested that countries within the British Commonwealth should draw on their historical connections and unite to face the challenges brought on by the global political and economic crises as well as to advance their development.
In his homily during a multi-faith service at St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral yesterday marking Commonwealth Day, Gordon said the Commonwealth had a unique, shared history, education and outlook, resulting from what he described as “the accident of history”, that remained valuable as the grouping of countries looked to the future.
In his view, the value system shared by the former British colonies, in spite of their different beliefs and practices, was critical to their development, given the failing economies and political might of other countries that were once considered power brokers.
“I believe that a culture could be built within the nations of the Commonwealth that could be the pivotal force for moving forward because as other nations are finding difficulty because they are disconnected from each other, there is something that the Commonwealth has that is unique,” the Roman Catholic leader told the congregation which was headed by Acting Governor General Elliott Belgrave and Mrs Belgrave, and included Chief Justice Marston Gibson, Government ministers and senators.
