THE?dropping of Ryan Hinds for disciplinary reasons may have been at the heart of the latest upheaval in local cricket that has resulted in three selectors resigning from the national panel.
First vice-president of the Barbados Cricket Association, Conde Riley, made that acknowledgment to the SATURDAY?SUN last night.
“The correct process as set out by Section 4 in the BCA’s code of conduct was not followed.
It is for the disciplinary committee to made decisions regarding disciplinary matters. That is not within the purview of the selectors,” noted Riley, who said that a player brought up for indiscipline has a right to be heard and to appeal if found guilty.
“The board respects their position but we have to move on.
I still have the greatest respect for all three men. It is I who recommended them on behalf of the cricket development committee.
“ The most important thing now is the development programme which is in place and to continue to invest in our young cricketers,” he added.
Hinds, the leading all-time scorer for Barbados in regional first-class cricket, was dropped by the selection panel but was reinstated by the board following a lenghty meeting.
In reference to the choice of captain, Riley said the final decision on captaincy was always with the board.
“The selectors have all right of way with the team, but the board has the final say on the captain. I am of the view that young [Shamarh] Brooks is the right person at this time to lead. He has led at every level from the juniors to the seniors and has exceptional leadership skills.”
Brooks, 23, an under-achiever with both bat and ball in 16 first-class matches, was given the nod over left-hander Omar Phillips, who has captained the Combined Campuses and Colleges, and all-rounder Kenroy Williams, skipper last year.
Riley noted that with Barbados in action again next week, a new selection panel would be in place within 24 hours. (MK)
