Edmund Hinkson is the Barbados Labour Party’s choice for St James North whenever a general election is called.
The 50-year-old attorney was greeted with hugs, screams and kisses just before 9 p.m. tonight, after defeating Douglas Skeete 175-136 in a close nomination election at the St Alban’s School.
The election was devoid of controversy, and a massive crowd turned up at the school, most of them arriving long before the scheduled 4 p.m. start.
Rawle Eastmond, the BLP stalwart who had represented the constituency for the past five general elections, did not turn up for the nomination, leaving it a two-horse race between Hinkson and Skeete.
Eastmond had indicated from last week he was willing to be the party’s sacrificial lamb, and would not be part of the nomination process, claiming the branch’s voters list had been padded.
Opposition Leader, Owen Arthur also attended the meeting, giving a 35-minute speech, after congratulating Hinkson on his win at the polls.
