No repeat of 1937

No worker discontent today can see a repeat of the 1937 rebellion because there are trade unions.
That is the opinion offered by University of the West Indies (UWI) History Lecturer Dr Henderson Carter, who delivered a presentation on the significance of the 1937 rebellion as Barbados observed a Day of  National Significance Friday, on the anniversary of the unrest triggered by harsh working and  living conditions.
Addressing a large audience at the Barbados Workers’ Union, Carter said the unrest of 1937 was a Barbadian rebellion, not a riot as it is popularly described.
During the question-and-answer segment, he said that a lesson coming out of the 1937 disturbance was the importance and function of trade unions. (GA)
