A FULL?investigation is being undertaken by Preconco Limited into the tragic incident that occurred last Thursday at its Lears, St Michael facility, in which Terrence Clarke lost his life and another employee was seriously injured.
The injured man Gregory Hill of Bibby’s Lane, The City, is currently undergoing medical treatment.
“We are all shocked and saddened by this tragic occurrence and our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims,” said Mark Maloney, managing director of Preconco.
“We pray that everyone involved and affected will find the strength to get them through this tough time. We have committed the necessary counselling resources to assist our injured employee, the deceased’s family and friends and our employees during this difficult time.”
Maloney, through a Press release, said the company placed strong emphasis on its safety practices in order to create a safe environment and emphasized that it was a major part of the Preconco culture, inculcated in employees every day.
“Having a manufacturing facility which relies on heavy machinery and technical equipment, we are always mindful of the risks involved in the operating of these. We have very stringent health and safety procedures in place which are managed by the health and safety committee and trained health and safety officials.
“However, none of this could have prepared us for this incident that could only best be described as a freak accident and the first of its kind at our company.
“At this time, we continue to gather the details of what happened and have committed the necessary resources to do our own investigations into this tragic accident and will put the required measures in place to ensure that an incident of this nature never happens again,” he added.
According to eyewitness reports, Clarke, who was a supervisor at the company where he had worked since its inception in 1991, was struck along with Gill by steel plates that became detached after some bolts loosened. (JS)
