Several members of the calypso and performing arts fraternity paid a visit to the Israel Lovell Foundation on My Lords Hill last Friday night to offer financial and moral support to calypsonian Malik, who last year had an accident that required surgery on his legs. Now walking with the assistance of two walking aids, Malik was on hand to meet and greet his many supporters as one by one as they turned up in support of their fallen comrade. A number of calypsonians, in addition making a monetary contribution, sang from their repertoire of favourite songs, much to the delight of the moderate gathering.First on stage was Red Plastic Bag, who told the audience that in his opinion Malik was right up there among the best calypsonians in the world. “When it comes to phrasing the man is untouchable; he is a class act,” he said before launching into his super hit Something’s Happening.Next on stage was Classic, who sang one of this year’s numbers entitled Come Close To Me. This was well received. Last year’s Pic-O-de-Crop finalists Sir Ruel and Colin Spencer, along with Jimmy Dan from the House of Soca also got into the singing act in the first half before MC “Alf” Padmore encouraged Malik to take on the younger Shawnee in a picong competition to see who would be crowned champion. While Malik brought the house down on a few occasions during the exchange, he was no match for the young general, who took advantage of Malik’s handicap and got the better of him. The Israel Lovell Dancers gave a sterling performance that had the audience captivated by their every move. The audience was quite appreciative. However, when Malik took the mike and began to sing his favourite number, World Cup Cricket, were it not for his walking aids visibly supporting him, no one would have imagined he had a handicap.Among others passing through in support of Malik were Richard Stoute, Sir Don, David Comissiong, Ronnie Clarke, the “Love Man” Romeo, Senator Arthur Holder, head of Batman Sinclair Gittens, Roy Byer and Trevor Prescod, along with Trevor Eastmond, who emceed the second half of the night. DJ for the night was Admiral Nelson, who was the person responsible for the exercise.Fans hoping to see Malik on stage again may have to wait until next year as this year Malik is fuh cup, the FIFA World Cup, just like the entire world.
