DESPITE A RISING DIVORCE RATE, evangelical preacher Reverend Dr Mark Harewood yesterday gave the assurance that “marriages can work”, by following practical and spiritual principles.
Speaking to the congregation at the Mount of Praise Wesleyan Holiness Church, Tudor Bridge, St Michael, Harewood, who heads Love And Light Ministries, said while the divorce rate among Christians was nearly as high as among non-Christians, marriages could survive against the odds through practical and godly principles.
Using Destination, Higher Heights as his theme, during the church’s Family Day service, Harewood said many social ills were “the result of weak families”.
He advised therefore that the word divorce must be kept out of the vocabulary of the marriage union, and if possible, “crossed out of the dictionary”.
“If you have issues in your marriage, deal with them; talk to a counsellor, or talk to Jesus,” he said.
While noting that it took two to make a marriage work, he pointed out: “The reason we have so many social ills is because the family is not strong. I am convinced that our marriages will survive anything, if we do things God’s way.”
He called on husbands and wives to stop believing that disagreements in a marriage was a signal that the marriage “is in trouble”.
“Disagreements can be healthy. Accentuate the positives, but also deal with the negatives,” he advised. (CH)
