Akela Jones finished sixth in the long jump and there were no medals for Barbados at the AAF World Youth Championships which finished yesterday in Lille, France.
Jones was in fifth position with her best leap of 6.04 metres – the first attempt – but was unable to reach the 6-metre mark in subsequent attempts. She fouled the fourth, then did not make any further attempts and slipped one place.
Jamaica’s Chanice Porter, who was in sixth place behind Jones, leapt 6.22 metres on her final attempt to snatch the gold medal from Italy’s Anastassia Angioi (6.17 metres) who had been leading from the first round. Marina Buchelnikova of Russia was third with 6.11 metres. (SAT)
