Unease at CBC

Uncertainty and fear are gripping the public service as Government’s retrenchment exercise continues.

It is looking like a blue Christmas for staff at the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), who were told by board chairman Melba Smith on Wednesday, that restructuring there should be completed by year-end.

CBC, the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS) and the Government Printing Department are among the state-owned enterprises to be restructured under Phase 1 of the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme.

Reports indicated the CBC meeting lasted for about 20 minutes and workers were told there would be negotiation with the Barbados Workers’ Union. A news release issued said since the discussions had to take place first, “there was not much more that she could add at this time”. (SAT)
