Springer Memorial’s Sade-Mariah Greenidge recorded her best time for the season in the Under-20 Girls’ 100-metre hurdles and reached the CARIFTA Games “B” qualifying standard last Saturday evening at the Open League 3 athletics meet.
Greenidge stopped the clock at 14.40 seconds, lowering her time from the 14.75 recorded at the Joseph Payne Memorial Classic last month. She joins Kenrisha Brathwaite (14.36), both with “B” times. Her schoolmate, Mikayla Bellamy was a distant second.
Almost unnoticed in the Over-15 Boys’ 400 metres was Foundation’s John Haynes who had a “B” time of 49.38, narrowly missing the 49.30 “A” mark.
The race featured some of the same athletes who dipped under 48 seconds last week at the Louis Lynch Championships, minus Anthonio Mascoll, Nicholas Deshong and Jerrad Mason who have already qualified. It was Foundation’s Shaquille Alleyne who won in 48.79 seconds, almost a full second slower than last week’s “A” time of 47.88. Pacers’ Christopher Davis was second in 49.31.
Those were two of the highlights at the National Stadium where most of the athletes seemed to have taken a break to recharge ahead of the upcoming inter-school meets, but several schools took advantage of the opportunity to get their athletes a run.
Springer, the defending girls’ champions, and male counterparts Harrison College also fielded reduced teams, as did Princess Margaret, The Lodge School and Alexandra. Others competed for their clubs.
While primary champions St Stephen’s and Bayleys weren’t present, athletes from Sharon Primary and Westbury Primary were among those getting a run.
Pacers’ Joshua Walcott won the Over-15 Boys’ 100 metres in 11.13 seconds. Kemar Jones of The Lodge School was second in 11.42 seconds and Blitz’s Jamar Flemming right behind in 11.43. Blitz’s Shae Nurse won the Under-15 Boys’ event in 11.77 seconds.
Foundation’s Christopher Taitt took the Under-13 Boys’ 400 metres in 64 seconds and Sharon’s Shaquan Sealy was second in 64.72. Shonita Broome of Elite Distance won the girls’ race in 1:09.82, with clubmate Jeal Williams, representing Westbury, second in 1:10.47 and Janeil Browne, also of Westbury, third in 1:12.16.
Over the longer distances, Princess Margaret’s Shamel Maynard won the 3 000 metres in 10:08.30 and the 1 500 metres in 4:33.90.
In the field events, Lodge’s Jahmali Downes won the Under-13 Boys’ long jump with 4.20 metres, and 5.77m was more than enough to give Mario Burke of the High Performance Programme the win in the Under-15 division.
Hakeem Clarke of The Lodge School cleared 1.50 metres to win the Under-15 Boys’ high jump and Springer’s Ariel Wood took the girls’ event with 1.35 metres.
