Barbados finished sixth at the Caribbean Junior Golf Championships won by Puerto Rico at the North Sound Golf Club in the Cayman Islands on Friday.
The Puerto Ricans captured the Hank James Trophy for the second straight year with an overall team score of 151 and were followed by the Dominican Republic on 139 and Trinidad and Tobago, 135.
Barbados finished with a cumulative total of 40 points.
The championships, which attracted 75 male and female players from the region in three divisions, featured both team and individual play over three days of competition.
Barbados were represented by Donald Leacock, Spencer Smith, Tommi-Ann Grant (girls 15-17), Chris Colby, Xzavier Wiggins and Iz Hustler.
The Barbadians performed creditably in individual strokeplay as Leacock enjoyed a good run in the boys’ 16-17 age-group, finishing fifth among 16 competitors with a 54-hole gross of 221.
Leacock posted a one-under-par 71 on the second day, the same day that Florida-based Trinidadian Matthew Marquez posted 68 and went on to be champion of the division.
Barbadian Xavier Wiggins also made his presence felt in the boys’ 11-13 age-group as he finished ninth with a three-day gross of 259 among a field of 19 players.
Colby and Smith finished mid-table in the 14-15 age-group, as Colby registered a gross 243 for 12th position and Spencer, a gross 245 for 13th.
The 26th Caribbean Junior Golf Championships were contested from July 2-5 and attracted players from Bahamas, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, the OECS, Puerto Rico, United States Virgin Islands, Trinidad and Tobago and hosts Cayman Islands.
Organizers said the tournament featured an additional incentive this year for champions in the boys’ 14-15 and 16-17 divisions, as they will go on to represent the Caribbean in a Central American qualifier for the Toyota Junior Boys World Championships. (PR)
