Close to 10 000 people took to the streets to “march for justice” yesterday, bringing Port of Spain to a standstill.
The march, which started at 1 p.m., brought traffic to a stop, caused commuters to pause and look, and even slowed down the pace of business in the country’s capital.
The peaceful protest saw a cross section of Trinidadians walking for over three hours in an event that ended with a rally at the Adam Smith Square.
Those who took part were marching against what they described as “discrimination, victimization and injustices against workers”.
Toddlers, babies in arms and in strollers, the old, the young, Rastas, Muslims, Hindus, Christians with Bibles in hand, and Trinidadians of all races took part in the march organized by the Joint Trade Unions.
Marchers, dressed mostly in red and carrying placards, Trinidad flags and red rags, paused by key government buildings singing and chanting loudly, “Kamla wants to silence the union. Enough is enough!”
Even a 15-minute downpour could not stop the marchers from getting their message across.
