BARBADOS ARE PICKING UP medals yet falling off the pace.
Despite another strong showing from their junior boys, the country’s swimmers have dropped down a spot to seventh following the third day of competition at the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships in Costa Rica.
Led by Damon St Prix and Jack Kirby, Barbados copped four more medals, including a gold in the 11-12 Boys’ 50-metre backstroke, to increase their tally to 17 medals overall (three gold, eight silver, six bronze).
The third-day haul moved Barbados’ points total from 166 to 216 – some 52 points behind sixth-place Honduras and a whopping 469 off Venezuela’s (685) top-of-the-table pace.
Kirby accounted for the Bajans’ lone gold on the night, winning the 50m backstroke in 31.59 seconds to beat out St Prix, who came second after posting 32.01 seconds.
St Prix claimed bronze in the 200m freestyle after touching the wall in two minutes, 8.26 seconds.
Amara Gibbs captured Barbados’ other medal by clocking 2:26.21 in the 15-17 Girls’ 200-metre butterfly to finish third in that event.
Luis Sebastian Weekes barely missed out on another medal-winning performance when he was fourth in the 11-12 Boys’ 100-metre butterfly (1:05.44), while Zabrina Holder also placed fourth in the 15-17 Girls’ 50-metre freestyle (27.77).
Weekes added a fifth-place showing in the 11-12 Boys’ 200-metre freestyle after posting 2:09.98 in that event. (JM)
