THE OBESITY RATE among school children in Barbados is way too high.
That is according to senior medical officer Dr Kenneth George, who has revealed more than 30 percent of this island’s school children are obese.
And one of the areas highlighted as a major concern is the fact that fewer Barbadians are now cooking at home.
“There is the feeling that much food is not being prepared at home. We have done a study which indicated Barbadians are increasingly trying to get their food sources out of their home,” George pointed out.
He also said the high levels of obesity were due to the large amounts of carbonated beverages and unhealthy snacks which children were consuming.
George was speaking today at the Dining Club, Newton, Christ Church where the National Nutrition Centre staged a cooking session for students of the Milton Lynch Primary and Christ Church Girls’ schools. (RB)
