The most?anticipated day of the Barbados Turf Club’s second racing season takes place tomorrow with the staging of the 64th Barbados Guineas at the Garrison Savannah.
The nine-race card which features the $54 750 Grade I Guineas for West Indian bred three-year-olds over 1 570 metres with a post time of 5 p.m. It is the first jewel of the Barbados Triple Crown.
The attractive card also features the Apostle Handicap for four-year-old and older horses rated 140-122 and also open to horses rated 121 and below over 1 800 metres. The Joseph brothers-owned Areutalkintome takes the top impost of 128 pounds. Winless in his four outings this year, he will be giving away weights ranging from eight to 18 pounds to the other entrants.
His main competition in this race should come from Knight Rider, shouldering 110 pounds; Daga, which is down to carry 120 pounds; Vanity Affair at 110 and the ever reliable Zoom, handicapped with 114 pounds.
The Happy Lion Handicap for three-year-old and older horses rated 85-67 over 1 570 metres could go down to the wire. The consistent Captain Sully from the Blue Diamond Racing Stable shoulders the top impost of 128 pounds.
Marcus Antonius with 110 pounds is seeking a third straight victory. The form of others such as Nekitta (117 pounds), Janak’s Gold (124 pounds) and Gold Mine (116 pounds) must be given serious consideration as they are all in great form with a win very much in the forecast.
The Maisons Laffitte Handicap for three-year-old and older horses rated 55-37 and also open to horses rated 36 and below over 1 570 metres has been divided into two groups. In Division A, Open Secret carries 128 pounds and her form suggests that she is just a race away winning.
Zaltarr is next in the weights, taking 127 pounds. Two other recent winners worth looking at are Dessert Man now taking 116 pounds and Tapit’s Code (124 pounds), Wingman (123 pounds), Jasmine (110 pounds) and Victoria Alexandra, 119 pounds, have been in good form.
The out of form Koh-I-Noor takes 128 pounds, which is the top impost. Appealing (113), Easter Monday (127), Memory Lane (125) and Ucan’tmeanme (120) were all winners in one of their last three starts, and will be seeking another win.
Racing starts at 1:30 p.m.
