Students step up

As the impasse between principal and teachers intensified, the Alexandra School Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) yesterday summoned an emergency meeting of all parents and guardians to discuss “urgent matters” related to the school.
This, as a spokeswoman for the 800-strong student body disclosed that fourth and fifth form students would be taking up “teaching” duties this week, in an effort to ease the burden placed on the 26 remaining professional educators who are not part of the Barbados Secondary Teachers Union (BSTU)-led industrial action against principal Jeff Broomes.
“Most of the senior students, in particular, are not pleased about the strike action by the BSTU,” fifth form student Kerry-Ann Bernard told the SUNDAY SUN yesterday.
Bernard, the spokesperson for more than 50 fourth and fifth formers, said it would be a huge undertaking for senior students who would be expected to supervise first, second and third form students, but they wanted to make a difference.
