OUTSIDE THE PULPIT: Parent role call

I was forces to re-read four times Matthew Farley’s column in the SUNDAY?SUN dated January 01, 2012 under the caption The School Bell Rings because I could not believe what I read. Then I said to myself – is this for real?
The article was very shocking when he stated that there were many parents “who have not received their child’s Report” for the term just ended.
That statement must be taken very seriously for Farley is in the position that he should know what he is writing about. It is very alarming in today’s world!
The question that must be asked is: Why is this happening in an age like this?
Is it because secondary education is free? Or is it because parents and guardians do not care or show interest in the progress of their child?
Too many students see school as a place to socialize and to have fun. The attitude about education in Barbados must change.
I appeal to all parents and guardians to be involved in the welfare of their children at all stages and levels.
Since I am dealing with education, what about the appointment of a Chief Education Officer?
After Dr Wendy Griffith-Watson retired as Chief education Officer in late 2009, Laurie King has been acting in that position. The question is how long will this country continue to have an acting Chief Education Officer?
