If ever there was an accident waiting to happen, it is on the Speightstown Jetty in St Peter.
Though it is closed and three jersey barriers were pulled together with chains and locks across its opening, and a sign placed to warn the public, people still find their way on to the damaged facility.
One barrier, though still locked on one side, has been twisted out of position on the other, while the sign has fallen to the ground and can easily be ignored.
And each day locals and visitors walk onto the jetty, with its missing panels exposing the pounding waves at its foundation more than ten to 15 feet below.
Yesterday, when the MIDWEEK NATION visited the jetty, two men were fishing, one sitting on the railings, and others strolling along the jetty.
A worker at the nearby fish market remarked that though the sign and locks had been put in place, the “people don’t care”.
Here, another man is about to walk onto the jetty, while other people can be seen on it. Inset, the sign on the jetty.
