MINISTER?OF FINANCE Chris Sinckler accused the Barbados Labour Party (BLP)?of being hypocritical as their election manifesto in some ways was supportive of students at the University of the West Indies contributing to the cost of their education.
In his wrap-up presentation on this year’s Financial Statement And Budgetary Proposals in Parliament early this morning, Sinckler pointed to page 55 of the BLP’s manifesto, which he said endorsed the programme for tertiary education as outlined in the report of the Beckles Commission.
Sinckler told the chamber that the Beckles Commission called for an 85 per cent contribution by the Government to the university, backed up by a tax, referred to as an education levy.
The Minister of Finance said the commission also called for a ten per cent contribution by the private sector and that students should pay five per cent of the cost.
