Callender on a mission

Ross Callender looks a man on a mission.
The in-form Callender continues to set the track ablaze after rolling to yet another victory in the 7 500 metres as part of his two wins during Wednesday’s Barbados Cycling Union’s Track League at the Randolph Field Velodrome at the National Stadium.
Racing under his customary G4S Team Swift colours, Callender outlasted a competitive field including Team Excel’s Jesse Kelly and teammate Darren Matthews, who finished second and third, respectively, in the gruelling 15-lap event.
This was after he had already defeated Kelly and Shane Weekes to take top honours in the seniors’ 3 000 metres.
It’s the third time in as many weeks that Callender has ridden away with multiple wins after signalling his return to form from as early as the season’s second week.
And he just missed out on capturing a third race on the night when he lost to Matthews in the Devil Takes The Hindmost event earlier in the programme.
Overall, it was a fantastic showing from Callender’s club, which won every non-BMX race save for the masters’ 3 000, in which victory went to unattached rider Sean Maloney.
Impressive junior Liam Lovell bounced back to beat rivals Edwin Sutherland and Kristin Vanderpool in both the 1 500 and
3 000, while Team Swift teammate Tremaine Forde-Catwell swept the juveniles’ 500, 1 000 and unknown events.
The fast-rising Chayne Goodman also rode unbeaten in the tiny mite division recording the same triple as Forde-Catwell.
Team Swift’s Ivan Puckering then relegated Maloney to second position in the masters’ 1 500 metres.
A-Class Batteries Golden Wheelers Jahmali Padmore and independent rider Zane Maloney also enjoyed successful outings in the BMX 10-12 and 7-9 categories, respectively. (JM)
