Kirby and Weekes miss out on spot in finals

Barbadian Jack Kirby missed out on a spot in the finals of the men’s 100-meters backstroke by a few seconds, after finishing seventh in the second of two semi-finals at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires last night.

The United States-based Kirby stopped the clock at 56.67 seconds, which wasn’t fast enough to land him a place today’s final.

He qualified for the semi-finals after placing 15th overall but sixth in his heat. Kirby will now turn his attention to his strongest event, the 50-meters backstroke, and 100m freestyle.

Compatriot Luis Sebastian Weekes failed to qualify in the breaststroke, finishing fourth in his heat with a time of 1.06.27.
