With four more days to go before Thursday’s by-election in St John, the Barbados Labour Party is feeling optimistic.
George Payne, chairman of the party, says he feels heartened by the response from the people of that constituency.
He told NATIONnews.com on yesterday: “Everyone has been respectful and welcomed us into the area. Our chances are just as good as anybody else’s.”
He said most of the issues being raised by residents of St John centre around the neglect of that parish, especially when compared to other constituencies.
“It is reasonable to expect that the facilities generally, housing and roads, are worthy of mention. But I would say some people mention the St John Polyclinic.
“A number of residents were not even aware that it was started by the Democratic Labour Party and was stopped by the Democratic Labour Party. We had to explain this to them, that it was not even a Barbados Labour Party project. Since the DLP has been in Government, they have not actually done anything to restart the project,” he said.
When NATIONnews.com caught up with Payne at Sealy shop in Sherbourne, Payne said he believed “one good thing coming out of the campaign” was the promises coming from the DLP including the restart of the polyclinic. He said it would be interesting to see how the Government plans to make it a reality in this economic climate.
“We are not coming with any promises we cannot keep. We remain focused on what we need to do to remedy the neglect in the parish”, he added.
