KINGSTOWN, St Vincent – Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves says his attorney general Judith Jones-Morgan will not resign after a state-owned bank won a multimillion-dollar award against her husband. The High Court has ordered Desmond Morgan, a former chairman of the National Commercial Bank (NCB), to repay EC$2.25 million (US$833 330) for loans and interest accumulated.“That doesn’t have anything to do with the attorney general,” said Prime Minister Gonsalves, who is also Minister of Legal Affairs.Gonsalves said the situation would have been different if Morgan, a businessman, still held the position of NCB chairman. The Prime Minister said that the attorney general who, by virtue of her office, is a shareholder of the bank “doesn’t have anything to do with the functioning of the bank”.“The attorney general is the principal legal adviser to the government but the bank has its lawyers,” said Gonsalves, adding “while the NCB is owned by the state, the bank has a separate legal personality”.The prime minister said the NCB has a responsibility to try to collect money from all who owe it.
