GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary General, Edwin Carrington, says the recent successful rescue of 33 miners in Chile is a “model of hope and encouragement to the world”.
In a message sent on behalf of the 15-member regional integration movement, Carrington said that the mission to rescue the miners who had been trapped for 69 days had been inspiring and both the government and people of Chile “must be commended for their vision, determination and decisive action resulting in a well-executed rescue operation”.
He said the “atmosphere of euphoria, patriotism and optimism which erupted at ‘Camp Hope’ as the miners were hoisted, one by one, to freedom was indeed reflective of the unity and resilience of the people of Chile – factors which undoubtedly enabled your country to overcome this disaster.
Carrington said that the world watched with “bated breath as the emotional rescue operation began and as the tense moments gave way to joyous celebration.”
Earlier this week, the Jamaica government and hotelier Gordon “Butch” Stewart extended an invitation for the miners to have an all expense holiday in the Caribbean island. (CMC)
