One way employers can address the issue of absenteeism in the workplace is to develop an absenteeism policy.
This suggestion has come from Tony Walcott, executive director of the Barbados Employers’ Confederation, who says employees have a “duty” to be at work.
His comments came during a presentation at the Human Resource Management Association of Barbados breakfast panel discussion today at the Savannah Beach Hotel.
The theme for the seminar is Managing Absenteeism and Attendance Problems in the Workplace.
Walcott also suggests that companies introduce a flexi-time and telecommute to address the growing issue of absenteeism.
He said, however, developing a policy should not be done without developing a tracking system.
Meanwhile, teacher and assistant general secretary of the CTUSAB Mona Robinson says in order to change employees’ attitude to work, employers should address some critical issues.
Robinson says two of the real issues contributing to employees absenteeism are an unhealthy work environment as well as stress.
The one day seminar is being attended by scores of human resource practitioners from a cross section of industries. (MM)
